Janice Scroggins

JANICE SCROGGINS states that she has always looked at music as being a form of prayer, meditation and healing. "I haven't talked about it much, I've just always done it." Formerly an attendee of Portland Church of Religious Science (now Portland Center for Spiritual Living), she recalls being at a point where, "I was really, really struggling. There are some things I still would like to have in order to make life easier, but it's not a struggle when I look at the source where everything comes: God as being that source." She sits down and plays as part of her praying and looks for it to come.

"I visualize what I want and need to have and that's what you have to do. I have visualized places I want to play and types of music and it's been happening. Music is something I love to do and something you can learn and do forever. It works the mind and everything. Music – the more you do it... it's like religion, meditation. All those things. It becomes like breathing. It just comes naturally.”

Janice Scroggins’ awards include: Grammy nomination, induction to the Cascade Blues Award and Hall of Fame, Portland Crystal Award, and the World Arts Foundation Lifetime Achievement. She began performing on piano at the age of three. Janice’s mother and grandmother both played piano or organ in church.

Janice has performed with many notables. Most visible is her work with legendary Soul Diva, Linda Hornbuckle with whom she records, and performs nationally and internationally. Others include Obo Addy, Mel Brown, Thara Memory, Curtis Salgado, Norman Sylvester, Lloyd Jones, Paul DeLay, Delbert McClinton, Terry Robb, Women in Blues, a “The Group”, and recently, a Gospel ensemble which includes Linda Hornbuckle, LaRhonda Steele, MaryEtta Callier-Wells and Ron Shoals. She also provides her services at Remember The Hope Christian Fellowship.
